Imposter Syndrome
Sewing clothes is skilled labor.
If you think making a shirt is easy, give it a try—then let me know how it goes. I’ve been sewing for 27 years, and imposter syndrome still sneaks up on me. Just last week, I was talking to a local organization about hosting sewing classes. As I wrote out my background, I had a brief moment of doubt. Am I good enough? Why would anyone want to learn from me? I don’t do this professionally. I don’t have certifications.
Then I realized—I’m exactly the kind of person who should be teaching. I taught myself to sew when I was eight. I’ve been through the struggles, the mistakes, and the frustration, and I made it through to the other side. Twenty-seven years later, I AM an expert. I’ve honed this craft for nearly three decades and continue challenging myself to learn new skills.
If I were a beginner, I’d want to learn from someone like me.
